A practice-based approach as the signature move

Social practices are bundles of objects, humans, knowledge and meanings that underpin our habits, actions and behaviour and are performed consciously or unconsciously. By starting to work on the practices affected by your business, you can sustainably transform the impact of your business and innovate your value chain.

  • 1. Frame the change

    Build a shared understanding of the challenge you seek to address and the transformation you want to realize.

  • 2. Localize the change

    The overall challenge is happening in everyday routines. Localizing the challenge means to connect wider cultural, political, environmental and technological factors to such everyday practices. What do people do when they do what they do?

  • 3. Populate the change

    What shapes what people do? Map and identify the influences that shape actions and whole practices.

  • 4. State the purpose

    Defining the purpose of your intended change helps you with the transition from the Systemic Design change loop to the Humand-Centered Design solution loop.

  • 5. Frame the people

    Try to make your target groups tangible and real. How do they behave, what do they like, what do they refuse? What is their position in relation to your challenge - are they more of an opponent or an enabler, more of an affected party or a beneficiary?

  • 6. Frame the journey

    Our practices are embedded in our everyday life. And here, much happens intuitively and uncon. Analyse the journeys of your target groups around the relevant practices to find opportunities for transformative innovation.

  • 7. Develop solutions

    Ideas, ideas, ideas! Your previous work forms the setting within which you are now looking for feasible solutions. Go for the low-hanging fruit, but also think big.

  • 8. Test and learn

    Much of what you do will be based on assumptions. Make it evidence by testing, iterating and optimising. You will learn a lot not only about your solutions, but also about your intended change. And the loop starts all over again.
